Determining Quality

Animal bones are evaluated based on several criteria, including physical examination. We look at cleanliness, size and coloring in addition to inspecting the bones for cracks, fractures, or other signs of damage.

To determine the quality of animal bones, several factors are considered, including: Age, preservation, density, etc.

  1. Age: Animal bones 18 months or younger have a tendency to fall apart when cleaning as they are still doing a lot of growing.

  2. Preservation: Bones in good condition, with minimal cracks, breakage, or discoloration, are considered higher quality.

  3. Density: Bones with high mineral density are more resistant to breakage and considered better quality.

  4. Preservation method: Bones that have been properly stored and preserved are typically of better quality than those that have not been.

  5. Purpose: Bones used for scientific research or display should be complete, well-preserved, and representative of the species.

When buying bones, make sure they have been properly preserved, cleaned and not brittle.  If you have questions about finding the high quality bone(s) for your next craft project, please email or call 605-673-4345
