High-Quality Fox Pelts | Uses for Fox Pelts | Fox Types & Colors | All Furs

A fox pelt can last for several years if it is properly tanned, cared for, and stored.

The longevity of a fox pelt depends on various factors such as how the fur was processed and how it is cared for.

Proper storage is also important in preserving the quality of the pelt. The pelt should be kept in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture.

When buying a high-quality fox pelt it should have a healthy and vibrant appearance. At Claw, Antler & Hide Company we evaluate the quality of a fox pelt based on these six important characteristics.

Fur Density & Thickness

A high-quality fox pelt should have a dense pelt with even fur that covers the entire body. A dense pelt helps ensure that it will be warm and provide good insulation. A good fox pelt should be thick and full. It’s important that there are no thin or bald spots. A thick pelt will hold up well over time.

Coloration

The color of the fur is an important factor in the quality of a fox pelt. Naturally, everyone has different color preferences. However, the most desirable colors are those that are bright, consistent, and free from any discoloration or fading. The color of the underbelly should be lighter than the color of the back.

Softness

Our customers expect and get a high-quality fox pelt that feels soft and supple to the touch. This is an indication that the fur is healthy and has been properly cared fo.

Leather Quality

Leather or inside of the fur should be soft stretchy with an off white or tan color depending on how it was tanned. You do not want any stiffness, discolored or yellow grease spots. This will shorten the life of the fur or hide no matter what you do to preserve i.

Size

Understandably, fox pelts come in different sizes and larger pelts are generally more desirable than smaller ones. A larger pelt will provide more fur for use in garments and other products.

Skin Clarity

The skin should be free from any scars or blemishes, and the eyes, ears, and nose should be intact.
