Elk antlers are a remarkable feature of these large mammals, primarily found in North America. Unlike horns, which are a permanent fixture of certain animals, elk antlers are shed and regrown annually. Typically, only male elk grow antlers, which they use during the mating season to establish dominance.

The growth of elk antlers begins in the spring, fueled by a diet rich in nutrients. As they grow, the antlers are covered in a soft, vascularized tissue known as velvet that supplies blood to the developing bone. By late summer, the antlers have reached their full size and are usually polished and hard. Once mating season is over, typically in early winter, the elk will shed their antlers, which can then be found on the ground in forests and meadows.
